Published on: 23/01/2023

Spain’s General Directorate for the Regulation of Gambling recently shared a report regarding gambling in the country in Q3 2022. The report included valuable insights into changes in online gaming during this period, and in comparison to the same period in 2021. The period covered in the report is July, August and September 2022.

What does the DGOJ’s report show?

As reported by the DGOJ, Spain’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) was 240.8 million euros in Q3 2022. Compared to the previous quarter, Q2, the amount increased by 18%. Compared to the same period in 2021, the increase was 31.2%.

These are both positive indicators for growth across gaming verticals in Spain. The gaming industry has attentively tracked changes during and post-pandemic to assess how recovery is going. It is common for data to show an increase in year-on-year reports at the moment, but growth between quarters in 2022 is an even more positive sign for the future of Spanish gaming.

The report covered many facets of the industry. According to the DGOJ, player deposits increased by 26.72% year-on-year, while player withdrawals increased by 24.85%. The growth compared to Q2 was not so high, with changes of just 4.60% for deposits, and a decrease of withdrawals to the tune of 8.7%.

Though marketing spend in the gaming industry increased by nearly 8% compared to Q2, the industry did not see much growth by way of new accounts. These instead decreased by about 4%.

A closer look at GGR

The report broke down the GGR amount for Q3 2022 into more detailed data. The highest percentage of 53.13% was attributed to casino gaming. The next greatest amount was 36.97%, belonging to betting, including sports betting and races. Poker was next with 8.36% of the GGR. Bingo and other contests constituted the rest of the percentages.

Betting as a general category also showed a great increase in comparison to both the previous quarter and the same quarter in 2021. It was a nearly 50% increase in both cases. Within that, the more specific category of counterpart sports betting increased by 19.12 percent and live sports betting by 76%.

Betting on horse racing decreased by about 33%, but other types of betting increased by nearly 100% from quarter to quarter. Meanwhile, the category of bingo grew by nearly 10% from quarter to quarter, though less in the year-on-year results. This might correspond to specific games available depending on the time of year.

Casino earnings grew nearly as much as bingo earnings did, with a 9.22% increase in Q2 2022. The year-on-year improvement was marked, reaching nearly a 30% positive change. This is clearly linked to the lessening of pandemic restrictions, which had caused shut downs to casinos during 2020 and 2021.

The DGOJ’s report even went further into specific games available at casino halls. Slot machine spend increased by nearly 30% compared to the previous year while roulette grew more, by nearly 40%.

Meanwhile, poker spending is one of the few areas of Spanish gaming to markedly decrease. Its earnings were 10% less compared to Q2, though about 3% more compared to 2021. Tournament poker play decreased by even more compared to Q2.

Finally, readers of the report were also privy to information regarding gaming industry bankruptcy. This figure is one of the most erratic of the report, showing neither steady growth nor shrinking. For example, bankruptcies increased by over 200% from Q2, but decreased by 72% from 2021. The figures have fluctuated heavily throughout 2019, 2020, and 2021.
