Dates Are Set for 2022’s World Championship of Online Poker

Published on: 17/08/2022

PokerStars’ prestigious World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) will return for a 21st consecutive year early next month. The 2022 series will boast $85 million in guaranteed prize pools across 104 events. There are Low, Medium and High buy-in levels. Entries range between $5.50 and $25,000.

The action-packed 2022 schedule – which will run between September 4 and 28 – sees the addition of 12 World Championship events. Winners of these nominated tournaments will become the World Champions of a specific poker discipline. These include Progressive Knockout, Heads-Up and 6-Max No Limit Hold’em variants. HORSE, Badugi, Pot Limit Omaha and 8-Game events will also be given World Championship status.

Stars Are Raising the Stakes

“WCOOP has long been the pinnacle of online tournament series. With the addition of World Championship events, we are looking to elevate the prestige of winning a WCOOP title event further,” said Chris Straghalis, Director of Online Poker Experience for PokerStars announcing details of the 2022 event.

“Not only are we offering a wide variety of buy-ins to provide a way for virtually anyone who desires to participate in a WCOOP event, but we also offer the most formats and variants in online poker with a choice of mixed games that are unique to PokerStars.”

One of the biggest changes to the 2022 World Championship of Online Poker is the entry fee to the No Limit Hold’em Main Event. Set at $5,200 since 2008, $10,300 will be required to take a seat at the showpiece event this year. The tournament features a $6 million guarantee – it had been guaranteed at $10 million every year since 2013.

12 months ago, a Russian player using the alias CrazyLissy collected $1,499,942 when beating 1,964 rival entries. It was the 15th consecutive year the WCOOP Main Event winner collected a prize of $1 million or more. Numerically, the 2007 WCOOP Main Event was the biggest. At a time when the competition cost $2,600 to play, there were 2,998 entrants.

Sunday 25th Is the Big Pay Day

Sunday, September 25, 2022, will be a big day for PokerStars online poker players. On this date, six Main Events plus the World Championship Hold’em and Omaha tournaments will begin. Combined these competitions offer over $14 million in guaranteed prize money.

This date has also been set aside for the first-ever official WCOOP Women’s Event. It will award a guaranteed prize pool of $38,000 across three buy-in levels. Additionally, there is a World Championship Women’s Event on September 18. It comes with a $530 buy-in and a $65,000 guarantee.

In total, the 2022 WCOOP Player of the Series Leader Boards – split into Low, Medium and High tiers – will award $100,000 in prizes. All World Championship of Online Poker winners are set to receive a coveted PokerStars WCOOP trophy. Main Event and Leader-Board winners will be awarded an even larger version of the prize.
