Belfast and The Power Of The Dog Head the Golden Globe Betting

Published on: 04/01/2022

Belfast and The Power Of The Dog are disputing favoritism for the Best Motion Picture award at the 79th Golden Globes. The recipients of all awards, decided by the 90 voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will be made public on Sunday night.

In addition to the centerpiece honor, the two movies are in contention for an additional six prizes. Only once has a film won seven awards at the Golden Globes. That was 2016 when La La Land took the event’s biggest ever haul.

Two films have won six awards at a single Golden Globes ceremony in the past: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975 and Midnight Express in 1978.

This year the betting suggests Belfast and The Power Of The Dog will leave with a hatful of prizes but individually they are unlikely to collect more than four Golden Globes.

Belfast Child Branagh a Home Goal?

Belfast – top-priced 5/4 at Unibet sportsbook – is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh. The movie centers on a young boy’s childhood amidst the Troubles in the Northern Irish capital during the late 1960s.

Released in North America on November 12, the black and white movie hits UK theatres on January 21. Its stars include Caitriona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan and Jude Hill.

Hinds and Dornan have both been nominated for Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture. The latter has been given a dismissive 13/2 quote but 68-year-old Hinds, best known for his appearances in Game Of Thrones, is 5/4 favorite in this section.

Another live Globe chance comes from Belfast-born Branagh himself. William Hill sportsbook offers an industry top price of 12/5 about him winning the Best Director award. Here Jane Campion, director of The Power Of The Dog, is the better-fancied candidate at odds of 3/4.

Dog Has Power With the Bookies

The New Zealander was nominated for the Best Director and Best Screenplay Globes in 1994 for her period drama, The Piano. Campion personally came away empty-handed, but the film did win one of the six awards it was nominated for.

28 years later, the bookmakers believe Campion’s latest film – bizarrely a western movie that was filmed in New Zealand and is a co-production between New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada – has an outstanding chance of winning at least one Golden Globe.

Benedict Cumberbatch is amongst the shorter-priced award candidates that star in The Power Of The Dog. Once again, the best odds can be found at William Hill. The firm offer 4/1 about him collecting the Best Actor accolade.

Co-stars Kodi Smit-McPhee is 6/4 in the Best Supporting Actor category and Kirsten Dunse is 5/1 in the Best Supporting Actress market.

Will’s a Strong Favorite in Best Actor

But the 2022 Golden Globes are not simply a two-horse race. King Richard, a biographical drama that follows the life of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, has four strong chances of collecting at least one award.

11/2 third favorite in the Best Picture betting, the film has a similar chance in the Best Supporting Actress section. Aunjanue Ellis, who plays the sister’s mother, is 6/1 in this market.

Much shorter, at 5/4, is Beyonce’s track Be Alive in the Best Original Song category. Shorter yet, lead actor Will Smith is 2/5 to win the Best Actor accolade with the best online betting sites.

Smith has had five previous Best Actor Golden Globe nominations. The first two came in the TV Series, Musical or Comedy section for his role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The next three were for lead parts in Motion Pictures: Ali (2002), The Pursuit of Happyness (2007) and Concussion (2016).

Remarkably he has never been successful, but the latest odds suggest the 53-year-old former Prince will finally be crowned King on Sunday.
